• About Filmværksted Viborg

  Filmværksted Viborg was founded as Open Workshop in 2001. Since then we have supported numerous animation projects and undergone significant development. In November 2024, we changed our name to Filmværksted Viborg to reflect our close collaboration and ties with the other film workshops in Denmark Filmværksted Viborg translates to “Film workshop Viborg” in English.

  There are four film workshops in Denmark all supported by the fund Filmtalent. The  workshops are located in Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus and Viborg. While the three other workshops mainly focuses on live-action filmmaking, Filmværksted Viborg primarily supports projects within the realm of animation – including but not limited to animated shorts, tv series, feature-films, gaming, VR, and interactive media.

  Filmværksted Viborg is supported by Filmtalent, which operates under the Danish Film Institute, and by Viborg Kommune.

  Residency and project support

  Filmværksted Viborg functions as an artist residency where both new and more experienced talents can live for a time to work on their personal projects, while also having access to skilled consultants within the animation industry. Filmværksted Viborg supports original and skilled talents and guides them along their chosen career paths.

  • Filmværksted Viborg provides an office space with a workstation, and you have free use of our facilities at The Animation Workshop
  • You will be assigned a consultant for your project who will provide continuous feedback.
  •  If you wish, you can also apply for a private room with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. The room is located in one of the barracks close to Filmværksted Viborg.
  • As part of your residency, you will also continuously participate in joint project meetings with presentations and feedback, as well as inspiring workshops and talks
  • Danish citizens has the option to apply for a grant of up to 25.000 DKK

  Portfolio

  Filmværksted Viborg also offers Portfolio spots. These spots are reserved for artist who wish to develop their portfolio in order to apply for a Danish education within the fields of animation, computer graphic arts, graphic storytelling and other visual arts. 

  • Filmværksted Viborg provides an office space with a workstation, and you have free use of our facilities.
  • You will be assigned a consultant for your portfolio work who will provide continuous feedback.
  • There will be mandatory workshops and admission talks where you will receive concrete tools to improve your portfolio. Please note that these workshops are organized based on the current portfolio requirements at The Animation Workshop and may vary from year to year.
  • As part of your residency, you will also continuously participate in joint project meetings with presentations and feedback, as well as inspiring workshops and talks

  Portfolio programme runs from September to March.

  These spots are only open for applications once a year in may. Please note that for portfolio positions, it is not possible to apply for accommodation, so you will need to find housing near Filmværksted Viborg yourself.

  Professional Portfolio

  We also offer Professional Portfolio spots - these spots are for those seeking time and space to organize and expand their portfolio or showreel in order to apply for a new job.

• FTAG

  Filmværksted Viborg runs the project “Filmtalent Animation & Games” (FTAG). FTAG is an activity project aimed at boosting awareness of the opportunities within the animation industry in Denmark, expanding the talent development, and hopefully inspiring and recruiting new animation and game talents. We do this by organizing workshops, presentations, talks, and networking events for the talent pool in the creative visual industry. The events are completely free and coordinated on a case-by-case basis.

  Through FTAG, we aim to establish and consolidate close cooperation with Danish higher education institutions as well as other institutions and organisations that develop talent in the fields of animation and computer games, thereby ensuring that the entire talent chain is strengthened.   To apply you must provide:

  You can download our application form marked “Additional info” by clicking the link below. 

  The Project Package should include all materials that will provide us with a clear understanding of your project, to enable us to make a thorough evaluation. Script/treatment, storyboard, budget, schedule, artwork, links, etc. and any other relevant information available should be included. The project package must be gathered into one cohesive PDF before uploading.

  Uploading your application

  Once you have gathered your documents, applications must be uploaded through VIA's online application platform NemStudie, by clicking the applicable Ready to Apply-link at the top of this page. 

  If you have a CPR number, simply use it with NemID to log in. If you do not have a CPR number, just enter your email address. You will receive an email with a link, press the link, choose English at the top right corner, then select “Educational programmes” > “Continuing and further education” and then Search for “Filmværksted Viborg” in the top right corner.

  Deadlines

  You can apply to Filmværksted Viborg four times a year; February, May, August and November.

• For current residents

  Apply for Quick Support

  If you are currently a resident or supported artist at Filmværksted Viborg, you have the option to use our Quick Support, which allows you to extend your residency or apply for minor assistance (materials, equipment, train tickets etc.). Quick Support has no deadline, and can be applied for at any time.

  Complete you Project residency

  Upon completion of your residency, you are required to inform Filmværksted Viborg of the projects status by submitting the Status Declaration form.

• How to credit your project

  Finishing your project

  When you’ve finished your project at Filmværksted Viborg (also for projects supported under the former name Open Workshop), you must include us in the credits of your project with a version of our logo and the following sentence in either English or the project's chosen language: Supported by The Filmværksted Viborg artist residency at The Animation Workshop / VIA University College

  Upon completion of your film, you must submit a Notification of Completion to Filmværksted Viborg, and submit the project to The Danish Film Institute’s film archive no later than six months after completion. This is mandatory for all projects supported by Filmværksted Viborg.
