  • Structure and content

The 16-week Professional Training course takes you through a series of lectures, assignments and mini productions, increasing in complexity, in the field of 3D character animation - from concept to polish.

The 3D Character Animation course is right for you if you want to learn from the best in an incredibly creative environment and develop both technical and artistic 3D skills.

Under the supervision of animation professionals, you are introduced to the modeling and animation software Maya and to 3D character animation. You will be guided through a series of exercises designed to transfer the classical 2D animation principles onto the computer and a 3D platform. Focus will be on body mechanics and physical action during the basic training, followed by the advanced concepts of pantomime acting and lip sync - both introduced in 2-week mini productions. The course will culminate in a final project, lasting 4,5 weeks, which will be your showreel masterpiece: a 20-30 seconds animated short film.

    What you get:

    • An intensive course developed with the help of industry professionals
    • Instructors from the industry who have up-to-date and production-tested knowledge

  • How to apply

We rate animation experience highly when evaluating applications but applicants with high technical skills in 3D software are also eligible.

To apply for the 3D Character Animation Spring 2019 course, please use the online application form. The application deadline for the course is November 30, 2018. We recommend non-EU applicants to apply as early as possible due to the long processing time for residence permits to Denmark

You are asked to provide a CV, motivational letter, and a showreel/portfolio. This can be simple exercises in a variety of formats (2D, 3D, stop-motion, cutout etc.).

In the event of a successful application to the course, you will receive a signed acceptance letter within 1-2 weeks after the application deadline. In connection to this, we ask you to confirm your seat as soon as possible afterward.

  • Information for non-EU applicants

The 3D Character Animation course is supported by the Creative Europe/MEDIA program of the EU. We  accept up to 20% participants from non-EU countries.
Please be aware that there is a discrepancy between the 16-week course (112 days) and the normal 90-day tourist visa to Denmark that applicants would normally be able to get without difficulties.

The 3DCA course is currently offered as a single-subject course, which under the current Danish immigration laws does not warrant a residence permit under “higher educational programs” for course participants.

You can find further information about visas and residence permits on the official portal for foreigners.

  • Fees and finances

The Animation Workshop/VIA University College (TAW) offers three types of scholarships to help fund your course.

The course fee is 2800 EUR (20,860 DKK).

The fee is the same for all participants regardless of nationality, unless awarded a scholarship. TAW first and foremost offers scholarships to course participants from Eastern European EU countries but in special cases, course participants from other EU countries, as well as non-EU countries, will be taken into consideration as well. TAW cannot grant a scholarship to every applicant but we try our best to help as much as possible.

You can apply for three types of scholarships:

    • Travel to and from Viborg at the beginning and end of the course
    • Housing (rent and utilities)
    • Course fee (partly or fully coverage)

Please note, you must submit a course application form before you can apply for a scholarship.

You can apply for multiple categories but please be realistic about what you need. Some applicants rely completely on a scholarship to be able to attend the course. You will receive an invoice for the entire course fee shortly before the start of the course. This will be sent as a PDF attachment to your e-mail.

  • Housing

We offer to help you find accommodation during your stay.

We aim to locate housing options that are furnished and located close to the school and which provide you with the opportunity to live with other adult course participants from the same course program.

The prices range between 300-400 EUR (2200-3000 DKK) per month.

You will be offered a specific accommodation by the housing organizer shortly after you have been accepted into the course. Rooms offered are typically located in the dormitory Camp Logos, which is located right next to TAW. Please note that TAW cannot guarantee that you get the specific room type you have requested. In some cases, we have to accept what is currently available from the housing organizer.

    Practical information
All rooms in Camp Logos are furnished with a bed, bedside table, bedside lamp, room divider, desk, chair, and kitchenette. Please note that there are no kitchen utensils for the kitchenette in the room but you can buy utensils at second-hand shops in Viborg. The school will provide a duvet and pillow, so you will only need to bring bed sheets and towels. There is also a shared kitchen and common area at your disposal.

The contracts you receive for your room includes a deposit, but TAW will act as the guarantee, so NO deposit needs to be made. You will still need to pay for any damages/missing rent when moving out.

If you have any questions in relation to housing during your course, please contact taw.housing@via.dk
