  • Structure and content

    Course content

PRO Summer School / 2d TV Animation is based on the program element “Animation Physicality Core area: 2D Character Animation Theory, Methods and Techniques” of the bachelor in Character Animation.

During the course, you will be practicing your ability to animate characters in 2d dancing and walking, implementing the principles of acting and physicality. Moreover, rhythm, sound and music will be addressed in regards to how it relates and influences an animated scene. Students will gain insight into how to develop believable and consistent characters through 2d animated performance.

Throughout the course, you will be animating in Toonboom Harmony, which will be introduced at the beginning of the course. Since the software is industry standard for animated TV-series, the course will provide relevant practice for you who are interested in entering that work field.

In general, the course is very practical and hands-on. The teaching will be a combination of lectures, assignments and feedback - individually and in groups, aiming at pushing each student to reach as high a skill level in 2d animation as possible.

    Daily program

     9-12  class
     12-13  lunch
     13-16  class

Sometimes, additional activities will be organized after school hours such as trips or social activities. The nature of these depend strongly on whether there will still be COVID 19 restrictions to take into account in August. In addition, the workload of the course is relatively high, so extra work on assignments outside of course hours is to be expected.

The course is rounded off with a graded exam based on the topic of the course.

  • How to apply

    Admission criteria

PRO Summer School / 2d TV Animation is open for students who have studied at least one year on a bachelor education or have some professional experience in visual arts. Applicants should already have acquired a foundation in animation, either because they already study animation or another subject where an introduction to animation was taught, or because they learned it elsewhere, for example as part of their professional work or in a course. Additionally, good drawing skills are needed to be able to follow the class.

    How to apply

When we are ready to open for applications to the next course, the application form will be available here. You will be asked to upload:

    • A CV
    • Proof of study if relevant
    • A portfolio (online link or pfd) including:
      -  life drawings, long and/or short (minimum 5)
      -  character designs or other animation related drawings (minimum 5)
      -  information about your animation experience, for example links to exercises or films that you made or a course/university diploma transcript proving course participation.

    About the application process

The application is first-come-first-serve, and we review the applications as they come. In the event of a successful application to the course, you will receive an acceptance letter within 1-2 weeks after applying. When the course is full, we will have to reject your application even though you meet the admission criteria. However, rejected, qualified applicants are put on a waiting list, and they will be offered a seat in case of cancelations.

    The application form

In order to access the application form, you will be asked to sign in. In order to do that, you need to create your own password on the log on page.

We are using a standard form for all VIA summer schools, that can not really be changed alot, so there might be a few confusing moments. F.ex. the course name is not mentioned, it just says “VIA summer school”. This is one of several VIA summer schools, so you need to write that your first priority is this course.

There is also another contact e-mail. Mails written to that will be forwarded, but it’s better to write directly to if you have questions about the course or the application process.

You will be asked to choose between certain options about you education status or background. Because we are using a standard schedule, some students can be qualified, f.ex. though professional experience, but do not find the suitable option in the menu. In that case, please just choose a random one and make sure that it is explained in your CV what your actual background is.

    Please note

The Animation Workshop, VIA University College (TAW) reserves the right to cancel the course should there not be enough participants.
