  • How to apply

    In order to participate, you need to submit a show reel and/or a portfolio that demonstrates your level of skills.

    To apply to the Creative Simulation Technologies course, please use the online application form. Please see the deadline under “Facts”.

    We will be happy to review your motivations for the course and would be glad to review your application which should include a CV and letter with descriptions of your background and interests going into the course. Other applicable additions could include a showreel and portfolio, video work, scientific studies or artistic pursuits. Experience with 3D software packages or node-based systems such as Nuke is considered a plus, but is not a requirement at all. The most important aspect is your strong motivation to dive into the field of simulations. Keeping an open mind and a solution-oriented approach is key.

    In the event of a successful application to the course, you will receive a signed acceptance letter at the latest within 1 week after the application deadline. In this connection, we ask you to confirm your seat as soon as possible afterward. For this year, you will be able to get a reply before the deadline. So please do not wait for the deadline to submit your application. The course might fill up sooner.

  • Structure and content

    Through the intensive 12-week course, you will achieve a thorough understanding of computer simulation in various forms using Houdini, TouchDesigner and direct coding

    Through the Creative Simulation Technologies course, you will master the craft of computer simulation in various forms. You will study and implement graphical, physics-based solvers as well as real-time simulations. The foundation of the course is based on Houdini, and additional software training includes Touch Designer, basic programming, and the game engine Unreal. With the study of these four elements - Houdini, TouchDesigner, coding, and Unreal – an artist has complete technical and artistic freedom with simulation; at the heart and edge of computer technology. On completion, you will showcase highly specialized knowledge of node-based procedural workflows. Projects will take the form of well-presented simulations in tandem with case studies targeted toward bringing new ideas into Europe’s diverse art and technology markets.


    Participant projects

    You will work on an individual simulation project throughout the course. You will choose a specific natural phenomenon that you must research. You will then have to recreate the phenomenon, or combine elements from different natural phenomena, as computer simulations. You can choose to render the end-product, the animated film sequence, in different ways, for instance realistically, graphically, or based on a game aesthetic, but the actual simulations in the scene will behave realistically based on the laws of physics. As a result, the participants’ final projects are short animated clips consisting of well-executed computer simulations combined with detailed case studies documenting their workflow and considerations throughout the process. Case studies are important for the your own creative process, but equally important for knowledge sharing and further development of the field.

  • Information for non-EU applicants

    The Creative Simulation Technologies course is supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA program of the EU. We can accept up to 30% participants from non-EU countries.

    The course has been structured to allow non-EU participants to join the course without having difficulties obtaining a visa for the 12 weeks onsite training. There is a normal 90-day tourist visa limit to Denmark.

    Media artist and educator

    Stefan is co-founder of the creative coding education hub, The NODE Institute, the projection mapping festival, Genius Loci Weimar, and the media art studio, MXZEHN. Trained as an architect at Bauhaus-University Weimar, Stefan explores the augmentation of physical structures using interactive and generative media and the narrative potential of abstract imagery. He holds a special interest in the art of live visual improvisation and creates augmented scenographies for theater, dance and music performances. Stefan enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with the students of different universities and the creative coding community. His studio produces interactive installations, live media performances and augmented reality applications for commercial clients, festivals, institutions and exhibitions.

  • Fees and finances

    The course fee is 2.850 EUR (21.200 DKK). TAW offers three types of scholarships to help fund your course

    The fee is the same for all participants regardless of nationality, unless awarded a scholarship. As per the rules of our co-funder Creative Europe MEDIA, The Animation Workshop can offer scholarships to course participants from so-called low production capacity countries. The Animation Workshop cannot grant a scholarship to every applicant but we try our best to help as much as possible.

    You can apply for three types of scholarships:

    • Travel to and from Viborg at the beginning and end of the course
    • Housing (rent and utilities)
    • Course fee (part or full coverage)

    You can apply for multiple categories, but please be realistic of what you need. Some applicants rely completely on a scholarship to be able to attend the course.

    You will receive an invoice for the entire course fee shortly before the start of the course. This will be sent as a PDF attachment to your e-mail.

  • Housing

    We offer to help you find accommodation during your stay.

    We aim to locate housing options that are furnished and located close to the school and which provide you with the opportunity to live with other adult course participants from the same course program.

    The prices range between 300-400 EUR (2200-3000 DKK) per month.

    You will be offered a specific accommodation by the housing organizer shortly after you have been accepted into the course. Rooms offered are typically located in the dormitory Camp Logos, which is located right next to TAW. Please note that TAW cannot guarantee that you get the specific room type you have requested. In some cases, we have to accept what is currently available from the housing organizer.

    Practical information
    All rooms in Camp Logos are furnished with a bed, bedside table, bedside lamp, room divider, desk, chair, and kitchenette. Please note that there are no kitchen utensils for the kitchenette in the room but you can buy utensils at second-hand shops in Viborg. The school will provide a duvet and pillow, so you will only need to bring bed sheets and towels. There is also a shared kitchen and common area at your disposal.

    As a PRO course participant, you only have to pay a reduced deposit of 5.000 DKK (instead of 10.000 DKK).
