  • Structure and content

In this course you will spend a week this summer playing with drawing and storytelling.

Through a series of exercises and small projects the teacher will teach you the basic principles of graphic storytelling and challenge you to work with the media in different ways. There will be a mixture of well defined and more free assignments, where you get to work with your own ideas. An introduction to some of the rich world of comics and graphic novels is part of the course.

    Time schedule

You will receive a detailed time schedule shortly before the course starts.

Except for the first and the second day, there will be six hours of teaching every day. Additionally, most days there will be optional activities in the evenings and afternoons.

  • How to apply

    Admission criteria

The summer course is open for everyone who turned 16. Participants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a grown-up or have friends or relatives in Viborg or surroundings, where he/she can be accommodated.

    How to apply

Application for the course will open in January 2023. At that time, a link to the application form will appear here.

The course is first-sign-first-serve so you can sign up as long as there are open seats in the course and the link is available. You will receive an invoice after the application deadline, but your seat is reserved as soon as you have signed up, and the application is binding. When signed up, you can cancel your seat and get a full refund of the course fee until one month before the course starts. Please note that you need to send us a mail in order to cancel.

We keep a waiting list in case of cancellations, so please mail if you didn’t make it before the course was full and would like to get signed up on the waiting list.

You will hear from us around a month before the course starts so please keep an eye on your email account. We will among other things send you a questionnaire regarding practical issues around the course, which we need for our planning so it is important that you respond to it as fast as possible after receiving it.”

  • Teachers

    Cecilie ”Q” Mainz Thorsen

    Cecilie “Q” Mainz Thorsen

Cecilie (alias Q) is a graphic storytelling graduate. If not stopped, she WILL talk about comics and stories for days on end. Her favorite genre is fantasy (but slice of life comes close), and her preferred D&D class is the bard. Her teaching style has been described as “shooting bullets of pure knowledge straight into our brains”

  • Housing

All summer course participants are offered free accommodation at the school during the course in the following ways:

    • in simple shared dorms, youth camp style: sleeping bags and camping mats/air mattresses on the floor of designated rooms (bring your own equipment)
    • tent outside of the school (bring your own tent and equipment)

There will be access to showers every morning in a nearby sport facility.

We have space enough for everyone, but participants are asked to sign up for the dorms and tent spots for us to be able to prepare adequately.

Participants who prefer a different kind of accommodation are asked to book alternative accommodation in town at their own cost.

We serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack in the afternoon on all course days, except for the half days. On the first day, we serve dinner in the evening, and on the last day we serve breakfast as well as a sandwich for lunch, which can also be enjoyed on the go if you are busy to catch a train/bus. These meals are included in the course fee. You can choose between mixed and vegan diet.

Please note that there is a small risk that The Animation Workshop/VIA University College will not be able to offer accommodation for this year’s summer courses, should there be unexpected changes in the national risk assessment due to COVID 19. In such a case, we will inform those who signed up for the course as quickly as possible.
