  • About

A darkly meditative journey that demands consideration of the size of things.

Kim Laybourn is a Danish artist with both a BA and MA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, Norway. Laybourn works in and with a wide range of media spanning from installation, sculpture, sound, music, text, to photography, print, animation, CGI, and video.

    The Significant Other

The Significant Other places itself between two conditions, in the transformation from one form to the next. In the film, a sequence of vistas of foreign and strange landscapes are presented derived from organic material in various stages of decomposition. This is illustrated in such a fashion that it looks unnatural and otherworldly, as from another planet.

The Significant Other explores the non-spoken, non-perceptional, the blind spot in the eye. That spot which Goethe’s describes as ghost-like in Maximen and Reflexionen. As something from another world, something we notice but cannot categorize, as something we understand but cannot measure or grasp as it neither contains form or limits. That which Clarice Lispector in The Passion of G.H names the unspoken that can only be achieved when language fails. The thing that can be sensed, but not explained or understood, as Ursula K. Le Guin explains; that which demands an enormous mental and imagination effort to reach, and asks; which tools do we have to get there?
