"Cells of Knowledge" and "The Superheroes in Liver Regeneration"

  • About

Metaphorical visual science communication about stemm cell research.

Cells of Knowledge and Superheroes in Liver Regeneration: Collaborative effort of scientists and animators.

An interdiciplenary collaboration of scientists from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Biology/UCPH (DanStem) and animators from the Sci-Vi Community in Denmark is aiming to facilitate a dialogue and build bridge between the two diciplines, and ulimately disseminate stem cell research to different segments of the society.

The first production in the collaboration was "Cells of Knowledge"; a short introduction to stem cells research and to the techniques used in research, Visual artist: Cosimo Miorelli, involved researchers: different reseachers from DanStem. This production was followed by the production "Superheroes in Liver Regeneration", telling the story of a scientific attempt to learn what happen to the liver when damaged and how this knowledge could be translated in the future and help healing liver diseases and improve patients quality of life. Involved scientists from DanStem: Elke Ober and Charlotte Bailey, Visual artist: Cosimo Miorelli.

With a generous grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Biology (DanStem) was instituted in 2011 as an international research center for basic stem cell and developmental biology. The Center scientists are solving complex problems in stem cell and developmental biology, spanning early embryonic development and organogenesis through advanced disease development and cell or drug-based therapies.

DanStem is part the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the University of Copenhagen.
